Decorated with petal reserves with birds and flowering plants and rockeries, the center with a scene taken from the famous Lanting Gathering in 353 AD, depicting the scholar Wang Xizhi observing geese, whose movements were said to influence his style of calligraphy. All set upon a yellow ground.
Diameter: 14 ½ inches (36.8 cm.)
Plates with this type of decoration are rare and more often have deep red or light green backgrounds. It is extremely rare to find one with a yellow ground such as this. An almost identical example (perhaps the pair to this plate) was in the famed Leonard Gow Collection, Glasgow, published: 1931, No. 189, Pl. XLIII.
