Based directly upon English prints that were taken to China, depicting the famed English actress Elizabeth Hartley. Both depict her in two of her famed dramatic roles: (left) as Andromache, in The Distrest Mother, and (right) as Lady Jane Grey in John Banks’ Lady Jane Grey.
Hartley was a famed actress in her day and lived a very colorful life.
