Chinese Sancai Glazed Figural Rooftile of the Buddhist Patriarch Ananda

Ming dynasty, ca: 16th century

Finely modeled, posed standing with hands held together in a
worshipful gesture.  Glazed overall in deep colors;
his face sensitively rendered.
Ming dynasty, ca: 16th century
Height: 13 ¾ inches (34.8 cm.)
A very similar example in Fahua colors is in the Anthony de Rothschild Collection, England: illustrated and described in the catalogue by Regina Krahl, 1996, Vol. I, No. 99.  Krahl notes that figural models of Ananda are rare and notes some dated examples in European collections.
