Chinese Reverse Glass Painting, “Triumph of Virtue”

Ca: 1810

Description

This remarkable painting in reverse glass technique was based upon a dramatic scene with clear religious overtones of a saintly woman rising to heaven from her deathbed.

Framed: 31 1/2 x 24 inches

Illustrated: Crossman, The China Trade,1972, Pl. 103.

An identical example is in the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem.

Western prints and paintings were taken to China where they were reproduced by artisans in this remarkable and difficult technique. Transporting these fragile paintings was another achievement.
