Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Deep Plate

Kangxi period, ca: late 17th century

Description

Decorated with battle scenes of the famed woman warrior Mulan.  All painted in deep and vibrant underglaze blue.
Diameter: 12 ½ inches (32 cm.)
A very similar plate with a variant of this decoraition is in the Rijksmusuem, Amsterdam.
Another with scenes of Court Ladies but with virtually identical border and with a Kangxi mark is in the Palace Museum, Beijing.

As this form is often considered a Western form, it is interesting to see such an example was in the Court Collection.  This is demonstrative that the demarcations of forms for Western and Chinese markets was more fluid during the Kangxi period andf that fine comparable examples may be found in important collections from the period.
